Savor the Umami of Life

Today I channeled these insights for an upcoming video on my Youtube Biofield Hacker channel, and decided this I should also share it in article form- as its imperative in life! I found myself laughing because, as the universe often does, it feels perfectly energetically timed. Venus is exalted in Leo right now, which asks us to come from a place of love and beauty—not that we shouldn't do that all the time, of course.

So today is about some of my favorite things. The things I find beautiful. The things I love. The things that nurture me.

More importantly, it's about having the strength to lean into joy and flow by surrounding yourself with beauty and the small things that make your heart sing. In my experience, that is one of the highest vibrational energies available to us and one of the greatest ways to invite more of that energy into our lives.

The things I'm going to share have something in common. They are about the sensual savoring of the umami of life. Think of it as robustness for the senses—if robustness is even a word.

Flavorful Food and the Joy of Exploration

Let's start with flavorful ethnic food.

From my perspective, compared with American food on the whole, ethnic cuisines tend to have more fun with flavor. The curation of spices and the blending of flavors allow the love of sustenance to come shining through.

Some of my favorite experiences involve tapas—trying a little bit of everything, tasting something different with every bite. It's so much fun.

From a flavor perspective, Ethiopian and Indian cuisines are among my absolute favorites. There is something magical about food that invites exploration and celebrates complexity.

Beautiful Design, Art, & Creation

I also love beautiful design.

One of my favorite pieces of architecture is Ronchamp because of its experimentation with light and shape. I love beautiful technology that is also utilitarian and efficient. I love art with soul and meaning, along with visual manifestations of designs that have something to say.

I am fascinated by things like the column designs from ancient Crete that were created against the grain. And I will take Corbusier and Gaudí over Frank Lloyd Wright any day of the week.

Give me bold colors, interesting juxtapositions, and masterful creations that reflect years of wisdom, skill, vision, and creativity.

Whether it's a handcrafted teak boat, small clay gnomes at a local market, or intricate metal sculptures, I am drawn to things that are different and innovative but made with heart. They are gifts to the world through their creation.

The Power of Scent

Smells are one of my favorite things as well.

The scent of orchids.

The salty ocean breeze.

Freshly brewed coffee or freshly baked bread.

Subtle coconut or vanilla that reminds me of summer.

A campfire.

A fresh snowfall.

Or even that distinct scent in the environment that signals rain before it arrives.

Scents are closely connected to our hearts because they can transport us back to cherished memories or allow us to become fully present in the moment—if we let them.

Music That Calls to the Soul

I also love good music that moves people, whether through rhythm, lyrics, or energy.

Some of my favorites include Louis Armstrong, AC/DC, Steve Cole, Kasey Chambers, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Cher, Cake, Zap Mama, Zac Brown Band, Lenny Kravitz, Texas Tornados, the Eagles, Soweto String Quartet, k.d. lang, Eminem, and 50 Cent.

When I'm grumpy, Texas Tornados always make me laugh.

Anything with a go-go or cumbia beat will usually get my attention as well.

I could go on and on.

In fact, the universe frequently speaks to me clairaudiently through songs and lyrics that I am unfamiliar with, which only adds to the collection.

There is just something about music that calls to the soul and raises your energy when you find the right soundtrack for the moment.

Adventures, Cultures, & New Lenses

I also love new adventures and cultures that feed my brain.

Whether it's learning new lenses, experiencing different traditions, exploring new cultures, understanding different philosophies, meeting new people, or immersing myself in entirely different ways of life, I am endlessly fascinated by the opportunity to expand my perspectives.

Every new experience teaches us something—not only about the world, but about ourselves.

Celebrations & Getting Wonderfully Lost

Celebrations bring me great joy as well, particularly the local ones that I am lucky enough to stumble upon when I am lost in a new place somewhere on an overseas adventure.

Those of you who know me personally know that I am absolutely terrible with directions.

Seriously terrible.

Some of my favorite travel experiences have happened because I accidentally wandered into them.

Whether it's discovering new traditions, sampling new libations (although I will always be loyal to Chianti at my core), celebrating milestones, witnessing diversity of thought, or experiencing entirely new ways of being, celebrations have a unique way of expanding our perspective.

They offer new sensations, new experiences, and often new insights about ourselves.

If we allow ourselves to proverbially "put it in our mouths" and see if we like the new taste—with the wonderment and curiosity of a child—we often discover something unexpected that resonates.

Nature: One of My Greatest Teachers

Nature, as I've discussed in other writings and videos, is incredibly dear to me.

I love its beauty, its rhythms, its sustenance, and the simultaneous freedom and grounding it provides.

I love how the body feels when it is fully connected to nature.

The sounds.

The smells.

The sensations.

The energy.

Nature has so much to teach us if we are willing to observe it. There is profound wisdom in its cycles, patterns, resilience, and balance.

Simply paying attention can teach us volumes about energy and flow.

The Joy of Learning

My love of learning is also paramount.

Whether learning comes through books, classes, people, experiences, synchronicities, or intuition, I view it all as nourishment.

It is brain food that resonates, expands the heart, and calls to the soul essence.

Learning has always felt less like an activity and more like a way of a life.

Poetry, Photography, & the Bookshelf That Confuses Everyone

Consistent with that love of learning is the joy I find in poetry, photography, and reading.

One of my favorite poems is A Coat by Yeats—which, for some reason, I always seem to mispronounce when I say it outloud.

Throughout the years, I have always displayed my channeled poetry and photography in my homes. Most people don't necessarily realize the work is mine; they simply experience it as part of the environment.

One of my favorite artistic creations was a collage composed of my photography of street art and graffiti in Colombia. The work was truly stunning. The creativity, color, and expression found in those pieces left a lasting impression on me.

And then there are books.

Because I consume books quickly, reading has always been one of my primary forms of relaxation.

Friends used to laugh the first time they came into my house and looked at my bookshelves.

To me, they made perfect sense.

To everyone else, they apparently looked like literary chaos.

The shelves usually contained a sampling of my favorites:

The Book of Honor.

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.

The Tipping Point.

Books on reflexology, mythology, cultural anthropology, and social psychology.

Works by Jane Goodall and Paulo Coelho.

Spy novels.

Lonely Planet travel guides.

The Alienist.

And then, inevitably, whatever spicy romance or erotica novels I hadn't read yet.

My reading speed has occasionally threatened to outpace the publishing industry, so I always needed fresh material waiting in the wings.

The travel guides, by the way, were rarely used for planning.

They were primarily for finding off-the-beaten-path gems or helping me navigate whatever logistical situation I had accidentally created for myself while wandering around another country without much of a plan.

Because, in my book—no pun intended—books are meant to be held in your hands.

People always seemed surprised by the diversity of what I read.

Although, honestly, I never understood why.

Anyone who truly knows me knows that I love variety.

I love contrast.

I love color.

And I love exploring life in all of its forms.

Deep Connection: The Gold in the Waterfall

Deep connections—and deeply connecting—bring me great joy as well.

Connections built on vulnerability, strength, passion, openness, reciprocity, and emotion create the beauty of true connection through the heart.

I have very little patience or tolerance for surface-level interactions.

What interests me are the spaces beyond the masks. Beyond the boundaries that were created from energetic tears and wounds of the past.

The spaces where there is simply love, flow, and connection.

The gift of ultimate intimacy—not sexual intimacy, but the kind that forgoes facades and gets to the heart of what makes people who they truly are.

The gold found in the waterfall of emotions.

I am drawn to people who understand that meaningful relationships of any kind are all-in—heart, body, mind, and soul—regardless of the frame.

People who value quality over quantity.

People who are selectively VIP about their energetic relationship "spend."

Trust.

Integrity.

Loyalty.

Morality.

Courage.

Respect.

Love.

Kindness.

Reciprocity.

Deep, unconditional love.

Those things matter.

Love in Action

And speaking of love, I also love LOVE IN ACTION.

Love in action is found in the small moments.

It's showing up.

It's standing shoulder to shoulder with someone.

It's people giving of themselves selflessly, even when they don't have to and there is nothing to gain.

It's stopping traffic to rescue an injured animal.

It's helping an elderly neighbor mow their lawn or load groceries into the trunk of their car simply because you can.

It's letting someone go ahead of you in line because you can tell they're in a rush.

It's buying a stranger a cup of coffee and lending them an ear because your intuition tells you they need one.

It's complimenting someone's smile, outfit, or jewelry because you genuinely thought something kind and chose to say it out loud.

Everyone could use a little more love in their life.

It's holding the door open for someone as a sign of respect.

It's tipping generously when you see someone working their ass off to serve you.

It's picking up litter.

It's returning someone else's shopping cart.

It's fixing something you know how to fix.

It's helping someone simply because it's the right thing to do.

It's offering encouragement, support, or direct truth delivered with empathy.

It's helping without expectations.

Without attaching invisible strings.

Without needing recognition.

Because it's simply the right thing to do.

It's kindness.

It's respect.

It's grace.

It's gratitude.

It's living unconditional love, always and in all ways.

I love observing that.

And I strive to live that.

Those moments bring me great joy.

Water, Fire, and Transformation

Lastly, the elements.

Water and fire, in particular, have always called to me.

I think it is the duality within them—the combination of immense power and profound transformational ability.

There is something incredibly humbling and awe-inspiring about fully engaging with the ocean.

You can immerse yourself in the waves.

You can marvel at an ecosystem teeming with life.

You can feel completely at peace.

Yet the ocean can just as easily sweep you under if you fail to respect its wild nature.

Fire is much the same.

A campfire can be hypnotic.

Comforting.

Peaceful.

Yet, in a moment, those same flames can engulf everything if they are not properly respected and contained.

Both elements embody wonder and power simultaneously.

They remind me of a quote often attributed to Rumi:

"You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop."

Our energies are not so different.

We can choose to be peaceful, joyful, and full of love.

Or we can burn it all down.

The choice is ours.

The Point

The point isn't the stuff.

It's never been the stuff.

The point is finding what speaks to you.

What makes your heart sing?

What lights you up?

What empowers you?

What nourishes you?

What feeds your body, mind, heart, and soul?

That is what matters.

A Simple Field Hack

Which brings me to a simple Field Hack.

Ask yourself:

Do you want to use your strength to lean into joy and flow by surrounding yourself with beauty and the small things that make your heart sing?

If your answer is yes, then do it now.

Figure out what you love and then indulge in it so it can love you back.

Allow it to nourish your body, mind, heart, and soul with your greatest and highest energies.

To me, that is self-love.

And frankly, it is one of the foundations upon which unconditional love is built.

When you know your joy, understand your love, and intentionally follow your heart, the universe is able to answer in kind—in co-creation and curation with you.

But first, you have to know your own authentic heart.

Not someone else's definition of what your heart should be comprised of.

Your definition.

Authentically.

Honestly.

Fully lived.

Don't let anyone—or anything—deter you from that.

So savor the umami of life.

It's here for you.
