Love Is Not Weak—It’s the Radical Choice We’ve Forgotten

As so often happens, I was enjoying my YouTube reader entertainment over coffee when a short video sparked a lovely seed for reflection and channeling (shoutout to the very vivacious Kate’s Regretless Life for the inspiration—and the reminder about Voltaire’s quotes).

Every single person in this world has someone they love. That statement may feel myopic, but if extracted properly, it can become the very thing that unites us in our shared humanity—when utilized in its deepest form.

Hear me out.

If you focus on the purest love you have for another—really allow yourself to let it engulf your body, mind, and soul—and then pull that thread of absolute feeling outward, extrapolating it to the globe at large… that is what builds the foundation for our commonalities.

I am you. You are me. And we are we.

Thoughts, actions, behaviors, systems, organizations, communities, and even nations distort this simple, raw truth with noise. That noise ends up bastardizing and fragmenting who we really are at our core—controlling and fogging our proverbial lenses with what “they” say, how we should show up, or even staunching the flow of how we freely express love at all.

What would happen if you allowed those proverbial layers of noise and mud to be washed away?

What would happen if you rawly and vulnerably acted from that core of love and heart—in every thought, behavior, communication, decision, and action?

How would you show up in the world? How would your world be different—for both you and others?

When we lose sight of love as a conscious choice, we become susceptible to the noise—stories that separate us from ourselves and from one another. Voltaire warned of this back in the 1700s with his words:

“Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

And yet, he also reminded us of what ultimately preserves our shared humanity:

“Love, the comfort of the human species, the preserver of the universe, the soul of all sentient beings—love, tender love.”
